Substation Engineer

Contract position: Engineering client is looking for a Substation Protection & Control Engineer with 3-10 years of experience performing substation protection, control and communications design for high voltage (69kV or above) electrical substation projects. This is a temp to perm position based out of Phoenix, AZ.

Responsibilities for the Substation Engineer
  • Perform substation protection, control & communications engineering as part of a team to support turn-key engineering, project management, & construction efforts
  • Develop equipment specifications for protection, control, and communications equipment in the substation
  • Perform power system protection studies and protection settings calculations for feeders, buses, transformers, motors, generators, transmission lines, and grounding systems
  • Create/modify one-lines, three-lines, control schematics, wiring diagrams, relay panel arrangements, and cable lists for high voltage (69-500kV) substations
  • Work with client to develop scope of work and conceptual design for new and modifications to existing substations
  • Create/modify technical specifications for major equipment, such power transformers, power circuit breakers, control house, and other high-voltage substation related materials
  • Coordinate with and provide technical assistance to SCADA Engineers, Substation Physical Engineers, and control design staff in order to fully develop system integration of protection, control, and monitoring system
  • Perform basic calculations such as voltage drop, CT burden and saturation, lighting, and short circuit with minimal supervision
Requirements for the Substation Engineer

  • BS or MS degree in Electrical or Computer Science Engineering, a FE or EIT is mandatory and PE license would be a huge plus
  • 3-10 years of experience designing protection & control systems (relays & metering) for high voltage substations
  • You need experience with microprocessor based protective relays, SEL or GE preferred
  • You must have at least a year of experience develping relay settings for SEL or GE high voltage protective relays
  • Perform system analyses including relay coordination, grounding, load flow, short circuit, and stability & power quality studies for high voltage substations
  • Use software applications (SKM, ETAP, ASPEN, etc...) for ground grid design, relay coordination, transformer sizing, and load flow and short circuit studies
  • Ability to prepare relay panel specifications and relay setting calculations
  • Experience with advanced high voltage substation protective relaying, carrier schemes, telecommunications, and SCADA
  • You need experience wiht one-lines, three-lines, diagrams, control schematics, wiring diagrams, relay panel arrangements, and cable lists for high voltage (69-500kV) substations
