Technical Writer III

job summary:
Position Description

  • Technical writers communicate complex information clearly, concisely, and accurately.
  • Technical writers are a key link between engineers, marketing associates, developer advocates, and external users and developers who constitute the Google ecosystem.
  • As a technical writer in Google's Advertiser Platform (AP) team, you create internal documentation that makes AP engineers more productive and knowledgeable.
  • You work with managers and team leads to identify and prioritize documentation projects, and you work closely with engineers to create the documentation.

  • Manage and prioritize complex documentation projects.
  • Write and edit technical documentation for AP engineers.
  • Run all-day writing sessions with teams of AP engineers.
  • Work with sample code to support documentation.

BA/BS degree in Technical Writing, English, Journalism, Computer Science, or a related field (or 4 years of relevant experience in lieu of degree).

  • Experience planning, researching, writing, and editing high-quality technical documents.
  • Ability to navigate a complex technical landscape and interact with multiple engineers to assemble documentation.
  • Ability to read and understand source code written in Java, C++, JavaScript, or Python.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Independence and initiative (e.g. curious, resilient, and comfortable with ambiguity).
  • Ability to learn quickly (e.g. provide deeply technical and process-oriented documentation "on-demand").
  • Assertive and comfortable taking risks (e.g. propose rewrites of docs vs. waiting for requests to rewrite).
  • Experience defining the overall structure of the documentation set.
  • Experience writing sample code in Java, C++, JavaScript, or Python.
  • Proficiency with HTML, Markdown, and CSS. - Proficiency in a UNIX environment.
Skill/Experience/Education
