Senior Network Engineer

Our client is currently seeking a Senior Network Engineer for a 7+ month contract opportunity located in San Ramon, CA.

Comments/Special Instructions

This is for a Network Engineer, Sr position.

Local candidates only

Possible 20% or less travel

The following skillsets would be beneficial during this phase and what I would look for in the selected candidate:

- Fundamental understanding of tcp/ip (packet captures, etc.), high speed switching,

- Fiber optics

- Network/device management.

Bonus Linux/UNIX understanding Applications platforms

Qualifications:

Required industry experience:

- 5+ years' experience in Data Networking managing large, complex enterprise network environments.

Required technical experience

- Requires demonstrated technical expertise in engineering systems design and analysis.

- Advanced understanding of networking systems and TCP/IP to include experience in IP Addressing and Subnetting; Network Address Translations; MTU; QoS

- strong knowledge of Routing and Switching systems (Cisco or Juniper); understanding of Routing Protocols (OSPF, EIGRP, and BGP) and Gateway Redundancy Protocols (HSRP, VRRP, and GLRP) to include experience troubleshooting issues with these protocols.

- strong knowledge of VoIP, Multicast, STP, VTP and Virtual LAN's and Trunking (VLAN's); Network Security (ACL's, IPSec Tunnels), Cisco ASA's (Security Appliances); SONET, ATM, MPLS, POS, Multicast and how to properly implement these technologies.

- strong problem solving skills.

Required functional experience

- 2-5 years network experience.

Required education and certifications

Network Engineer (Specialist) - Senior Job Description:

This individual will be responsible for establishing and maintaining network performance and IT information systems. Evaluates and recommends a broad range of technology architecture related to networking components and management. Responsible for development of solutions driven by customer requirements, identifying components, building architectural artifacts for proposal development, writing proposals, working with other infrastructure teams to build working solutions. An expert in the field, able to guide & instruct technical staff, and demonstrating a structured and methodical approach to complex problem determination and solving. It requires the candidate to be able to see the big picture architecturally and also be able to deep dive into specific technical issues/details.

Roles and responsibilities:

- Provide 3rd tier technical support of a product line, enterprise platform and/or technology service offering.

- Knowledge and experience to function as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) across one discipline area such as Transmission, Voice, Wireless or Data Networks.

- Applies knowledge of the operation, management, and maintenance of network and telecommunication systems, linked systems and peripherals in order to enhance network operations.

- Operational support including monitoring, analysis, diagnosis and resolution of problems involving hardware, OS, peripherals, infrastructure and telecommunications applications.

- Provide on-site or remote support for project implementation.

- Availability for 24x7 call-out support, and occasional system-wide travel to support installation.

- O&M work, and systems acceptance. Provides consulting to Engineering, Planning, and Clients.

- Participates in design reviews on new deployments.

- Partners with Product Managers and technical architects to make recommendations for new or retired products

- Work closely with peers, supervisor, team members and others as needed to identify, plan, prioritize and implement project deliverables.

- Work closely with other IT groups to ensure systems are maintained in an efficient manner, and communicate all issues, changes, outages, maintenance, etc. in accordance with established policies and procedures.

- Perform testing and evaluations of new technologies in a lab environment. Assist other specialists, analysts and technicians as appropriate in developing their own technical skills through training, presentations and involvement in the process of maintaining and supporting these systems (installations, upgrades, troubleshooting, problem resolution, etc.)

- Create and maintain training class curriculum, conduct internal classes and coordinate vendor training.

- Evaluate and articulate market needs and opportunities for technology-based products and services.

- Assist ISTS professionals and application stakeholders in product implementation and use.

- Provide content-specific advice to technical architects.

- Continually look for opportunities to improve processes, reduce costs, increase efficiencies, etc.
