Our client has a job opportunity for an Automation Technician / Programmer in the greater Sacramento area.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Automation Technician/Programmer performs duties under the general direction of the Electrical Manager / Supervisor. Works independently to perform maintenance, repair, and/or modification of the plants computer driven controls systems and the plants mechanical and electrical systems. Is involved in fabrication, application, installation and repair of mechanical and electromechanical equipment.

Responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Day to day trouble shooting, repair and installation of low and high voltage (single / three phase) industrial electromechanical & control systems for utility & production equipment.
  • Create parts list and determine best routes for conduit runs and wiring in accordance with NEC code and applicable standards. This includes both building electrical and machine electrical panels.
  • Assist in maintaining documentation for existing and new equipment, control and building power system installations.
  • Provide assistance to mechanical installations as directed.
  • Work independently in troubleshooting and repair problems with PLC and HMI related components when required.
  • Be able to obtain back-up PLC and HMI programs from a server to reload and reboot PLC and HMI programs to restore faulted equipment.
  • Assist with system startups and operational checkouts on systems including configuration, wiring, calibration, grounding and power testing.
  • Diagnoses cause of electrical or mechanical malfunction or failure of equipment or systems.
  • Repairs or replaces defective components.
  • Experienced in the use of electrical diagnostic equipment such as multimeters, amp clamps and meggers to test electrical circuits and components to locate shorts, faulty connections, defective parts and replaces or repairs to suite.
  • Interface with production management and maintenance staff to ascertain problems with equipment.
  • Disassembles replaces or repairs mechanical and electrical components. Must read and interpret electrical and electronic drawings, schematics, blueprints, engineering drawings and sketches to determine problem and make appropriate repairs.
  • Must be competent to make electrical/mechanical diagnostic evaluation and prescribe corrective action.
  • Test and calibrate electrical/electronic systems and components to ensure that they are operating properly or locate defects.
  • Uses computerized equipment and software to perform testing functions and produce graphs for records and tracking.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs electrical/mechanical problems in the robotic systems.
Devises, sets up and operates electronic instrumentation and related electro mechanical or electro pneumatic/hydraulic apparatus used for operation of mechanical or electrical equipment or drives. Utilize technical materials such as equipment manuals, SDS, safety materials, system drawings, Process and instrument Diagrams (P&ID's), schematics and blueprints to troubleshoot and maintain systems. Writes procedures, work instructions and work orders and maintains records of repairs, calibrations and tests in the SAP system. Maintains program backups for control system programmable devices such as controllers and touch screen displays. Must have working knowledge and experience with Rockwell software such as RS Logix 5, RS Logix 500, RS Logix 5000, Panel Builder 32, and Factory Talk View. Installs, calibrates and repair process instruments. Performs other duties relating to the overall effort as directed. Must be able to lift up to 70 pounds and maneuver 75 pound fuel tank. Must be able to work overtime if required.

Qualifications

SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum 5 years of experience in writing, programming, and trouble-shooting PLC / HMI controllers and facility electrical work is desired. PLC certificate preferred from a reputable educational entity. Must be competent to make electrical/mechanical diagnostic evaluation and prescribe corrective action. Competencies: Be able to read, interpret, and modify electrical prints and schematics and document all self-created changes. General understanding of explosion proof and intrinsically safe work environments. Knowledge of applicable NEC and NFPA codes. Complete understanding of Plant electrical systems, including DC voltage and AC voltage from 24V to 480V. Must be a certified fork lift and aerial lift operator. Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions and communicate. Must be able to work in adverse working conditions to include but not necessarily limited to those environmental conditions to which the employee may be exposed while undertaking the essential duties and responsibilities of the position. In this position the employee is periodically exposed to wet or humid conditions; fumes or dust; tight or confined spaces; shaking and or vibrating equipment. The noise level requires the use of ear protection. The employee must be able to work in difficult ambient temperatures. Complete understanding of relay and discrete device control systems. Proficiency in electrical installations with conduit and wiring practices. Experience using sensing and control devices. Experience using both DC and AC motors, VF Drives and Servo Controlled Systems. Familiar with process instruments and applications. Able to verify instrument performance and calibrate instruments as necessary. Must be familiar with vision inspection fundamentals and practices.
