job description

QA Analyst

job summary:
What the Job Involves:

1. Manually testing out new features

2. Manual regression testing of old features

3. Automated regression of old features

4. Maintaining/Improving the manual and automated regressions

5. Protocol Paperwork (JIRA tickets, ServiceNow tickets, etc)

6. Early morning release shifts every 1-4 weeks (typically aiming for once every 2 weeks)-for our team, these are usually 6am shifts

7. User Role Management for Applications, which we are looking to automate some in the future

8. Documentation and Communication: making defect tickets, asking for clarification where needed, and bringing up scenarios that were not considered during requirements gathering

9. "Making the call" to postpone a release if a critical bug is in the way

10. About 1-3 times per year, a short weekend shift will be necessary

11. Sprint planning and demo meetings

Relevant Side Notes for Applicants:

1. QA Analysts are not on call-being on call may be a significant downside to some people. It is a duty that developers have, but QAs do not. QAs have early-morning releases on a more frequent basis, but releases are predictable and QA have a say in their scheduling

2. Release shifts are typically only on Tuesday/Thursday, with rare exceptions on Monday/Friday

Technical Skills:

1. Programming, ideally in Ruby or Python

2. Familiarity with HTML and CSS selectors, at minimum

3. Familiarity with a form of testing (whether Unit Testing, UI testing, or another form)

4. Basic understanding of an Agile Software Development Life Cycle

5. Experience in a QA position or working with testing frameworks in the past is good (especially Watir and Selenium), though simple programming skills and a conceptual understanding of testing can suffice

6. Manual testing of the applications

7. Experience with JIRA, Jenkins, Java, Javascript, and Excel is a bonus, but not essential

8. Experience with Load Testing is a major bonus

Soft Skills:

1. Teachable

2. Flexible (this is a must, since things change frequently, there are competing priorities, and the standards vary by application)

3. Patient and empathetic

4. Willing to work with both variety and routine issues

5. Willing to work with 3 applications with different standards: our apps have different acceptable margins, and there is also a balance between giving the client verbatim what they ask for versus giving what we believe is best for the client

6. Amiable/friendly (good chemistry with the team)-this one is a must

7. Willingness to ask questions, and to learn the difference between similar-sounding, yet distinct, scenarios

8. Communication skills, particularly written communication: detail is preferable to brevity

9. Initiative (excitement is also a bonus)
