Commodity Manager

job summary:
Create, execute, maintain, and continually improve upon commodity strategies for the commodities assigned; focused on current and future alignment of technology requirements, and achieving objectives in terms of total cost, lead-time, capacity, inventory management, risk mitigation, and over all supply chain effectiveness. Leads the development of these strategies in coordination with global colleagues and other functional areas (e.g., Quality, Product Engineering, Manufacturing, Service Parts, Logistics)

Lead the evaluation and selection of new suppliers, development of existing suppliers, and overall supplier management

Develop competitive negotiations to drive cost reduction initiatives with the global supply base, while meeting capacity and quality requirements

Manage supplier contracts and long term agreements with preferred suppliers to ensure that market trends, supplier performance, and future business needs are aligned

Collaborate with supporting resources (engineering, quality, global supply chain, and regional teams) to achieve plan, ensure adequate cycle time to procure materials, and escalate critical materials from supplier based to meet customer demands

Provide leadership in and develop an understanding of insight into the market for the commodities assigned; including industry trends, cost drivers, global pricing, lead-times, technology and manufacturing capability of company suppliers and suppliers in the market that best meet expectations and objectives

Draft and submits annual budget proposal for Fabrication & Weldment Commodity. Updates budget on a monthly basis and tracks performance against projections. Makes modifications based on changes in economics, raw materials, volumes, etc. and investigates and explains budget variances

Manage supplier relationships and performance to meet company expectations and objectives

Anticipate, recognize, analyze and solve complex supply problems; communicating to and involving colleagues, management and stakeholders as necessary

Coaches, develops, and trains buyers to meet the highest possible standards and to ensure the achievement of challenging purchasing objectives

Lead teams in identification of opportunities to meet objectives for supplier reduction, creation of value, supply chain improvement, and customer satisfaction

Identifies areas requiring process improvement. Initiates and leads team-based effort to implement improvements; ensure coordination actions with other personnel to ensure consistent message

Requirements:

A Bachelor's Degree in Purchasing, Supply Chain Management, Business or a related field.

A minimum of 10 years of Purchasing experience to include significant experience in a supply activity, experience developing budgets, maintaining databases and delivering budget targets on an annual basis, including projections, reporting and variance analysis.

Ability to travel up to 15% (domestic and international).

Preferred Skills/Experience:

A Master's Degree is preferred

Previous supervisory experience (direct or indirect) is strongly preferred

Previous work experience with a heavy industrial company preferred

Outstanding negotiations skills - getting to win/win agreements

Demonstrated technical aptitude and business acumen

Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word)

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Experience in driving strategies to improve performance on cost, quality, and delivery.

Effectively communicate across all organizational levels, departments, and functions

Proven project management and process improvement skills

Ability to perform scenario analysis and strategy development

Demonstrated financial acumen and ability to perform cost assessments and analysis

Thorough knowledge of Corporate purchasing practices and the sourcing process.

An extensive amount of independent thinking is required

NAPM CPM and APICS CPIM certifications are preferred
