Data Governance Analyst

job summary:
Large financial institution is currently seeking a Data Governance Analyst responsible for ensuring the successful execution of the data governance program across business areas through the implementation of data governance and data management activities and solutions while working in partnership with business, technology and architecture leads. This is a 12 month engagement with potential for extension and is available for immediate hire.

Primary Responsibilities of Data Governance Analyst:

  • Identifies data management solutions based on existing data governance framework and business strategies to improve data management at source, transformation and consumption points.
  • Performs data quality management activities including data profiling, data validation, and assessing data relevancy to further improve information reliability.
  • Enforces data governance through validation of compliance to data standards and data usage to ensure consistent/appropriate data transformation practices.
  • Ensures harmonization of data governance framework vs. practices as well as consistent usage of tools across the business. Works closely with IT lead to implement new and evolve data management capabilities.
  • Collects support data to regularly publish data governance dashboard. Documents and maintains data governance activities, maintains logs, and records issues and corresponding resolutions.
  • Participates in the evaluation of complex business processes and future business needs to identify opportunities for improvement through the use of data management solutions.
  • Supports more senior associates to solve for new data concepts and metadata problems through root cause analysis techniques. Promotes and educates others on data management practices to effectively implement and manage data governance standards.
  • Collaborates with the Data Steward, Architecture, and Information Technology to prioritize and resolve: data sourcing, business rules, data aggregation, data distribution, and data consumption.
  • Ensures adherence to the policies, processes, practices and procedures for the enterprise. Develops and communicates key data management scorecards and dashboards based on key metrics and indicators. Diagnoses inconsistent definitions/use of data, identifies inaccuracies and recommends improvements and solutions.
  • Facilitates the implementation of data management directives resulting from market and/or regulatory changes. Monitors and validates data quality and related metrics to support internal and external requirements for data management activities. Produces related scorecards for communication and improvements. Manages the integrity, usability, and security of all data assets under Data Governance Office purview.
  • Cultivates and manages relationships with internal and external parties. Develops effective relationships with IT, EPMO, Sr. Managers, and Project Teams. Communicates data governance changes and improvements with project teams and data stewards.
  • Manages data governance issues and small to medium data management-related projects. Coordinates team and stakeholder communications, including creating project communications, status reports and facilitating project meetings. Manages critical data, related risks and issues. May engage with external vendors for accurate delivery of data.
  • Participates in creation of the business case and project proposal. Serves as escalation support for data management, and leads the development of training documentation for users on as-needed basis. Leads root cause analysis and manages data remediation. Manages, prioritizes and maintains the inventory of data debts for communication and future remediation.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of the investment management industry as it relates to the companies various lines of business (e.g., retail, institutional, high net worth), investment mandates, investment vehicle structures, investment operations, competitive landscape, reporting and regulatory environment.
  • Hands-on data governance or data management experience, principles and standard enterprise strategies. Applies learning to implement key data management solutions.
  • Intermediate knowledge and implementation of data management solutions, master data efforts, and data modeling.
  • Intermediate knowledge of general data management practices, including but not limited to: Data management standards and approaches, Data quality management (validation, data profiling, etc.), Data governance practices, including data governance program lifecycles, Data stewardship practices, and Data sourcing practices.
  • Working knowledge of project management principles including a demonstrated understanding of project lifecycles and traditional project management activities.
  • Working knowledge of process design and re-engineering.
Education and Technical Skills:

  • Requires a minimum of 8-12 years of related experience in data governance
  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in a related area of study
  • MBA is strongly preferred but not required.
  • MUST have strong SQL experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; strong presentation skills.
  • Strong computer skills, especially in Microsoft Excel (Pivot tables, V-Lookups, etc) and experience with an enterprise accounting system (such as SAP). Must have SQL experience
  • Exceptional analytical skills and the ability to understand the impact of operations on financial results.
