job summary:
This is a 20-30 hour per week Controller contract role and requires a CPA. We are partnering with a leader in the water services for oil and gas companies. The ideal Controller will be degreed with at least five (5) years of experience as well as oil and gas industry experience. Step into the role of Controller where you will be the sole accountant responsible for full-cycle month-end close, budgeting, and forecasting. Must have experience with NetSuite software.

Work with the outside accounting and tax partners, while successfully utilizing Netsuite;

Lead the preparation of the monthly and annual financial statements and issue timely and accurate financial statements.

Set 2021 targets to close consistently by Business Day 5.

Provide audit and tax partners with final financial statements to allow K-1's be issued by March 1 each year.

Automate everything as much and as reasonable as possible. Limit manual accounting;

Don't simply report the results. Take the time to compare to budget and past periods to understand and explain what's happening. Understand the past to help influence the future!

Be aware of continuing changes in the Company's operations, corporate finance practices, accounting, insurance and taxes in order to keep up to date policies and procedures, to reduce Company costs and/or improve efficiencies.

Work with operations team members to understand revenue and expense drivers, influencing as necessary to help improve performance;

Review contracts to ensure they are accounted for properly;

Manage the production of the annual and monthly budgets and actual variance reporting;

Evaluate & understand the variances to budget before issuing financial statements;

Work with department heads to assist in understanding their costs and performance drivers - help the company become more cost conscious and focused;

Assist in preparing, reviewing and filing any borrowing base, compliance and incurrence certificates in accordance with the requirements underlying the Company's credit facility and/or loan documents;

Understand proposed transactions, capital projects and M&A opportunities and advise management on the permissibility and feasibility pursuant to limitations imposed by GAAP, or limitations in financing documents;

Manage, facilitate and fully utilize the Company's financial related information, reporting systems and business intelligence tools and develop real time dashboard reports;

Analyze complex financial information and reports to provide accurate and timely financial recommendations to management for decision making purposes;

Prepare presentations for the board of directors and senior management team;

Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors;

Put in place appropriate policies and procedures to minimize fraud and opportunities for fraud;

Analyze current and past trends in key performance indicators including all areas of revenue, cost of sales, expenses and capital expenditures;

Ad-Hoc reporting and analysis as required


Bachelor's Degree in Accounting preferred, Masters Degree a plus;

5-10 + years' experience including as an assistant controller, or sitting controller;

Public accounting experience helpful, 5-10 years;

Would like knowledge and high skill levels in Netsuite;

Should have working experience in a Private Equity environment, working sometimes under short time frames;

Public company experience a plus

Articulate with excellent verbal and written communication skills;

Ability to think creatively, highly-driven and self-motivated. Must be able to step away from the numbers and answer 'what is happening?' in the business. Must be a thinker as much as a doer;

Demonstrated ability to roll-up sleeves and work with team members in a hands-on management capacity;

Must be able to work from home and manage time wisely.

Energy industry experience with several years as Controller or Asst. Controller.

Solid experience interacting and presenting to stakeholders including executive management, Boards of Directors, financial analysts, and/or shareholders.

Some experience with non-investment grade bank and bond covenants, and should demonstrate through the interview process a solid grasp of both legal and financial understanding of key covenants and possible "pitfalls" while managing through all periods of an economic cycle.

Must be able to understand and explain the numbers, be detail oriented;

Must be a leader of great integrity, high ethics and motivated to succeed, and helping his/her team members succeed;

Must show the ability to get projects done on time, quick with analysis and reporting;

Candidate should display a good track record of success through on-the-job examples of projects completed, positions held, and samples of high-quality work product;
