job summary:
Director of Finance
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Finance will lead all day-to-day operations of the finance department while ensuring compliance with GAAP and other applicable standards, rules and regulations. The Director will also collaborate with a variety of internal stakeholders, including executive-level staff and other department directors on budgets and financial reporting. The Director will be charged with identifying new opportunities to improve efficiencies, eliminate backlogs, and respond proactively to other department needs. The Director will analyze existing processes, work closely with the CFO and finance staff to streamline current systems, leverage new finance-related information technology tools, and refine standard operating procedures to provide maximum benefit to the organization.

responsibilities:
Strategic Financial Management
Manage all accounting functions and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with GAAP and other regulatory requirements. Monitor and maintain strong internal controls.
- Manage the month-end and year-end close process; producing timely and accurate
financial reports.
- Monitor monthly progress and refine and/or develop appropriate financial metrics for
the Board and senior leadership.
- Prepare monthly reporting packages for the Board of Directors and senior leadership.
- Collaborate with members of the senior leadership team in drafting, reviewing, and
verifying accuracy of annual budgets and reports by department.
- Implement consistent accounting policies, practices, and procedures across all
programs.
- Optimize the handling of banking relationships and initiate appropriate strategies to
enhance cash positions.
- Prepare all required debt covenant calculations.
- Oversee the coordination and activities of independent auditors ensuring all financial
statement and retirement plan independent audit issues are resolved, all compliance issues are resolved, and the preparation of the annual financial statements is in
accordance with U.S. GAAP.
- Oversee tax compliance with all federal, state, local, and other tax regulations. Lead the annual Form 990 process.
Process Improvement
- Work with the CFO to implement process improvements in the areas of financial
reporting, payroll processing, student billing, internal controls, and budgeting.
Team Leadership
- Supervise the finance department, comprised of three Staff Accountants -
Payroll/Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable/Student Billing, and General Ledger.
- Provide clear direction and expectations to staff, as well as training and development
opportunities.
- Manage workload issues and strengthen communication within and outside the
department.
- Execute work online when directed and needed to include deliverables: meeting and
collaborating online with team members and supervisor(s), fulfilling duties and
responsibilities via approved online platforms, meeting assigned goals in a timely
fashion, and maintaining a positive online presence in representing the organization.
qualifications:
- Prior accounting experience with a 5+ year successful track record in a senior
financial management role.
- Ability to anticipate and implement the financial infrastructure and systems needs
- Technologically savvy with the ability to manage data for effective financial reporting,
and act as administrator for accounting and budget software; working knowledge of
Sage Intacct is a plus
- Solid understanding of U.S. GAAP.
- BA or BS required. CPA or MBA a plus.
- Personal qualities of integrity and credibility.
This organization is based in Wash DC and the Finance Dept works under a very flexible, hybrid work schedule arrangement. Salary range is $125,000 - 150,000.
