We have been conditioned to prepare for interviews with facts and well-rehearsed answers to questions about our experience, skills, judgment and critical thinking. But research suggests that it is also the questions we ask that show our interest, level of preparation and how closely we’ve been paying attention.
Questions show we are engaged and interested in learning more, something a recruiter and interviewer see as positive signs.
Randstad recruiters revealed the five most important questions you should ask during a phone interview or in-person meeting with your recruiter. Here’s what they had to say:
what kinds of positions are available for my skill set?
Candidates who apply online can review current job postings to get a feel for what’s available and the skills required.
But a recruiter will review your resume, do a phone screening and uncover your experience and how it matches with open positions now and as they come available.
Your recruiter will be your best advocate, so communicate your skills, goals and ambition. They will use this information to match you with a position and market you to a prospective employer.
what should I know about this organization?
Your recruiter will provide you with background on a company before you interview and will encourage you to visit the website to do some research of your own.
Understand what the company does or what it makes, the culture of the organization and as much as you can about what will be expected of you. Your recruiter will often give you information on the hiring manager as well, like their background and personality.
If you have questions, ask. And if your recruiter doesn’t know the answer, save your questions for the interview. They’ll show that you have an interest in the company and in learning more.
what questions should I ask in the interview?
The rule of thumb is to have at least five questions prepared. That way if something is covered in the course of the interview, you’ll still have one or two to ask.
Our recruiters recommend asking questions about day-to-day responsibilities, why the position is open, what success looks like in this role, things your interviewer likes about the company and if there is a training program.
are there things to avoid in the interview?
Do not have your phone in view or take calls during the interview. Avoid being late at all costs. Do not wear sweatpants or shorts.

Show you’re serious about getting the job by taking the initiative to find out what comes next. Ask your recruiter if there are things you can do to prepare, about timelines, things you can do to gain additional experience and more.

The same goes for the interview. As the time with your interviewer comes to a close, be sure to ask about next steps. This shows you are interested, gives you an idea of how you should handle any follow up and ensures you understand the hiring process.
