Responsibilities
- Code Assignment: Accurately assign CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS codes for professional services related to Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM), including complex monitoring procedures and associated physician oversight.
- Procedure Expertise: Demonstrate proficiency in coding for surgical specialties commonly utilizing IONM, such as spinal surgeries, cranial surgeries, peripheral nerve procedures, and vascular procedures.
- Documentation Review: Review and analyze surgical reports, operative notes, and monitoring records (such as Neurophysiologist notes and Supervising Physician interpretations) to ensure documentation supports the services billed and meets all compliance standards.
- Claim Submission/Rejections: Work closely with the billing department to resolve coding-related claim denials, rejections, and pended claims, utilizing up-to-date coding guidelines and payer policies.
- Compliance: Maintain expert knowledge of CMS, NCCI edits, payer-specific coding policies, and other federal and state regulations related to medical coding and billing for IONM services.
- Auditing: Participate in internal and external coding audits and provide feedback and training to clinical staff on documentation improvement to maximize coding accuracy and compliance.
