Key Responsibilities (Inspection, Repair, and Maintenance)
The mechanic will be responsible for the comprehensive service and certification of commercial tank trailers, covering all mechanical and regulatory aspects:
- Inspection & Compliance: Conduct thorough Inspection of trailers, focusing on regulatory adherence and structural integrity (DOT, HM-183).
- Structural Repair: Repair and replace main structural components, including the sub-frames and bolster plates. This involves expert Welding (steel, aluminum, stainless).
- Running Gear: Inspect, maintain, and overhaul the landing gear assembly, axles, springs, and air suspension systems.
- Brake Systems: Diagnose and repair all aspects of the Brake system, including pneumatic lines, chambers, shoes, and ABS systems.
- Tank Components: Service and test specialized tank components, including pressure/vacuum relief devices (Venting), manways, and internal safety valves.
- Hydraulics & Electrical: Troubleshoot and repair Hydraulic systems (used for pumps/hoists) and all trailer Electrical components (lighting and safety systems).
- Accessories: Maintain non-structural components like fenders and mud flaps for compliance and safety.

Responsibilities
Core Mechanical & Structural Skills
Diagnose: The ability to quickly identify the root cause of mechanical, pneumatic, electrical, or structural failures.
Welding: Performing structural repairs on the chassis, sub-frames, and tank shell (often aluminum or stainless steel).
Brakes: Expertise in repairing, adjusting, and inspecting the entire brake system, including air lines, chambers, and ABS diagnostics.
Suspension: The skill to inspect and repair the landing gear assembly, axle components, springs, and air bags.
Alignment: Checking and correcting the straightness and positioning of the sub-frames and axle assemblies.
Specialized Tank & Safety Skills
Compliance: Adhering to strict federal regulations (DOT, HM-183) for tank safety, including proper inspection of the upper 5th plates (kingpin bolster).
Hydraulics: Troubleshooting and repairing hydraulic systems used on specific tank trailers for pumps, hoists, or discharge equipment.
Venting: Maintaining and repairing critical tank components like pressure-relief valves and vents.
Inspection: The comprehensive act of checking all structural and regulatory components, including landing gear assembly, upper 5th plates, sub-frames, brake system, fenders, and mud flaps.
Cosmetic & Accessory Skills
Electrical: Troubleshooting and repairing all lighting, wiring, and safety interlock systems.
