As a bilingual call center employee, your main role will be to provide customer service to customers in one or more languages. Depending on your position, you may be making outgoing calls and reaching out to customers, or receiving inbound calls with the goal of helping customers complete an action, troubleshoot issues or obtain important information.
Bilingual call center workers typically work in call center or office environments, although you may also be able to work remotely. You will spend most of your time working on the computer and using communications technologies to support customers. No travel is required for the position. You can expect to report to a call center manager or team leader.
Day-to-day tasks at call centers tend to be fairly consistent, but your area of focus, such as the type of customer service you are providing, will shape your role and responsibilities. Daily tasks that may be part of your role include:
More specific tasks will be assigned based on your role and the goals of your employer.
Bilingual call center employees tend to work for companies that have a large international footprint. However, given that there are call centers located across the country — and that much of this work can now be done remotely — you should have no trouble finding opportunities from coast to coast.
Being bilingual is a required skill for this position, obviously. Companies are currently seeking professionals with experience speaking a wide variety of languages: French, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, German and more. In addition to language skills, here are some additional skills requirements that may be part of the job:
A high school diploma or GED is commonly a minimum requirement to work in a call center, but additional education and experience may be required. At bilingual call centers, needless to say, experience with at least one language other than English is required. Additional on-the-job training may be provided by your hiring company.
Bilingual call center positions can be launchpads for careers in communications, customer service, sales, marketing and more. Above all, your experience working in a call center will help prepare you for many other roles that require expertise in dealing with customers.
