The Controls Engineer is responsible for the complete electrical lifecycle of custom equipment, from initial system design and regulatory compliance to hands-on testing, field commissioning, and cross-functional project management. This role requires technical leadership, rigorous attention to documentation, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

responsibilities:
- Lead the design and development of complete electrical systems for custom lifting and handling equipment, including control panels, drive systems, power distribution, instrumentation, and safety circuits.
- Serve as the lead engineer for Gorbel jobs, control upgrade projects, single girder crane (no runway) projects, and all electrical aspects of crane design.
- Create and maintain detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and purchased part drawings using Solid Edge Electrical.
- Prepare comprehensive electrical submittal packages and ensure accuracy of documentation for manufacturing and field installation.
- Ensure all designs rigorously comply with applicable industry regulations (e.g., IEEE, IEC, NFPA 70, UL, CSA), project-specific specifications, and relevant government standards.
- Perform essential engineering calculations, including load flow, short circuit, voltage drop, grounding, and arc flash analysis, to validate system performance and safety.
- Stay current on emerging standards relevant to material handling and control systems.
- Develop detailed work plans for electrical projects to ensure successful, timely execution across design, manufacturing, and installation phases.
- Participate directly in the hands-on wiring, assembly, and testing of complex electrical systems, including building panels in the future.
- Create and execute specification-specific FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) and SAT (Site Acceptance Testing) procedures.
- Travel to customer sites to support system inspections, commissioning activities, and field troubleshooting.
- Lead electrically heavy site and process improvement projects, including evaluating existing infrastructure and gathering critical site information.
- Work closely with mechanical engineers, software developers, QA teams, and project managers to ensure electrical systems are seamlessly integrated and delivered on time.
- Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and interdepartmental meetings.
- Identify opportunities for improving electrical design practices and recommend new technologies to enhance safety, reliability, or efficiency.
- Provide technical assistance for installation, commissioning, post-delivery support, and warranty calls that are electrical in nature.
- Support the configuration and programming of PLCs (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley) and HMIs, collaborating with outside vendors for complex motion sequences (Future).
