A Mechanical Engineer is needed for a manufacturing company considered one of the world's leading innovators in materials science in the Hickory, NC area. This is a Mechanical Engineer role focused on designing, troubleshooting, and integrating mechanical upgrades for fiber optic manufacturing equipment in a high-precision production environment.

responsibilities:
- Design precision tooling and mechanical assemblies using Inventor, AutoCAD, and Vault.
- Create and modify technical drawings while applying drafting standards and GD&T.
- Develop experimental plans to validate new mechanical designs for fiber optic cable equipment.
- Troubleshoot mechanical systems including pneumatics, flow control, and water cooling.
- Source components by obtaining vendor quotes and managing part procurement through machine shops.
- Assemble or oversee the physical installation of systems with hands-on involvement.
- Debug and resolve technical issues when integrating new designs into production lines.
- Manage mechanics and electricians during equipment assembly and installation phases.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including IT, process, and electrical engineers.
- Update operational documentation and provide training for manufacturing personnel.
- Ensure a proactive approach to job site safety and compliance with plant policies.
- Experience with mechanical system design and integration.
- Ability to generate or modify mechanical models/drawings primarily using Inventor (or similar 3D CAD software), Vault and some AutoCAD.
- Knowledge and application of drafting standards including GD&T.
- Ability to work with machine shops/vendors to complete part procurement.
- Hands on experience with mechanical system troubleshooting such as pneumatic controls, flow control, water cooling systems, etc.
- Experience with manufacturing equipment repair and maintenance.
- Experience managing mechanics/electricians for equipment assembly and installation.
- Familiarity or experience with plastic extrusion manufacturing
- Experienced in electrical system troubleshooting including low and medium voltage systems, motion control, PLCs, temperature control systems, etc
- Working knowledge of data analysis techniques using Microsoft Excel, PI and/or PowerBI
- BS in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology degree or comparable engineering experience.
- 3+ years of experience.
