A Controls Engineer is needed for a manufacturing company considered one of the world's leading innovators in materials science in the Hickory, NC area. This is a Senior Controls Engineer role focused on designing, programming, and managing advanced Allen Bradley automation systems and electrical architectures for high-speed fiber optic manufacturing.

responsibilities:
- Create, debug, and modify Allen Bradley ControlLogix PLC programs using ladder logic, structured text, and function block diagrams.
- Design and implement new automated control systems for fiber optic cable production.
- Generate and interpret electrical schematics and control panel layouts using AutoCAD Electrical 2023.
- Manage the controls engineering scope for capital expansion, process improvement, and equipment obsolescence projects.
- Program and integrate HMI/SCADA systems, including VFD and Servo motion control and high-level communication protocols.
- Mentor and train junior controls engineers and plant personnel on new technologies and systems.
- Oversee external system integrators to ensure fully integrated process equipment delivery.
- Lead all project phases from design and fabrication to installation, startup, and technology transfer.
- Troubleshoot complex electro-mechanical process issues to identify root causes and implement solutions.
- Ensure compliance with NEC, NFPA, and Lock-Out Tag-Out safety codes for all equipment and processes.
- Must have experience in programming of Allen Bradley ControlLogix v20 systems or higher and the ability to generate, debug and modify PLC code - ladder logic, structured text and function block diagram.
- Must be able to generate and interpret electrical drawings using AutoCAD Electrical 2023 for systems design including control panel layouts, component documentation, and schematics.
- Prepare initial CAD design layouts of both complete electrical controls systems and control sub-sections. Review electrical drawing packages for conformance to company standards.
- Must have the ability to reach fundamental understanding of process issues utilizing sound troubleshooting skills.
- Must have experience in programming of HMI / SCADA systems programming in a plant environment including higher level communications protocols.
- strong fundamental understanding of electrical design practices, machine/motion control systems, electro-mechanical systems, VFD and Servo programming, communication protocols, and practical application.
- BSEE / BSCS / BSME / BSMET.
- With 4+ years manufacturing experience working with PLCs / HMIs / VFDs controlling process and automation equipment; other engineering will be considered with relevant work experience.
