An energy technology company is hiring a Mechanical Design Engineer to lead structural analysis and new nuclear plant projects. This role requires a mechanical engineer with a degree and at least 8 years of experience in the energy sector-specifically including leadership and customer-facing roles-to lead the design, analysis, and technical integration of complex nuclear reactor components using tools like Autodesk Inventor and ANSYS while ensuring compliance with ASME and AWS standards. This is a 12 months contract.

responsibilities:
- Responsible for mechanical component design activities supporting existing boiling water reactor fleets and small modular reactors.
- Focus on equipment design, internal components, plant servicing equipment, and fabrication and installation support.
- Handle mechanical component testing and demonstrate accountability for cost, schedule, quality, and technical accuracy.
- Provide technical guidance and leadership while supporting project scheduling and resource planning.
- Develop talent through mentorship and act as the point of contact between engineering teams and customers.
- Take personal responsibility for the impact of designs and associated risks.
- Maintain open communication with interfacing engineers, project stakeholders, and customers.
- Operate in a matrixed engineering team to ensure high quality deliverables in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
- Lead the analysis, design, test, and integration of mechanical components and equipment.
- Perform fundamental engineering hand calculations and modeling.
- Prepare and present design reviews and technical reports to internal and external customers.
- Facilitate discussion and information exchange to promote open dialogue within the team.
- Collaborate with experts in other functional teams to ensure product designs meet application requirements.
- Work closely with sourcing and fabricators to provide technical support.
- Prepare invention disclosures to protect technology and provide a competitive advantage to the business.
- Bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering or an equivalent engineering discipline.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in the energy business or an equivalent technical environment.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in a program or technical leadership role.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working with customers, regulators, and suppliers.
- At least 9 years of experience performing independent or team based component design and technical reviews.
- At least 9 years of experience with applicable industry standards such as ASME, AWS, and BWRVIP reports.
- Prior nuclear industry experience including technical support of boiling water reactors or pressurized water reactors.
- Experience with sodium fast reactor technology and design.
- Experience with control rod drives or fine motion control rod drives.
- Experience with nuclear core and fuel design.
- Experience with the selection and use of lifting and rigging equipment and safety factor determination.
- Ability to troubleshoot improperly functioning equipment and implement changes.
- Working knowledge of modern fabrication processes and practices including welding and material selection.
- Experience with a variety of fabrication techniques such as conventional machining and EDM.
- Familiarity with lean principles.
- Experience with Inventor, Inventor Vault, and product lifecycle management software.
- strong interpersonal and proven leadership skills.
- Proven ability to think strategically, be creative, and work efficiently.
- Knowledge of geometric design and tolerancing (GD&T) practices.
- Knowledge of the ASME and AWS codes.
- Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor 3D CAD design.
- Proficiency with ANSYS finite element analysis (FEA).
