Responsibilities
- Set up and calibrate CNC lathes, mills, or routers based on specific job orders and technical drawings.
- Load and unload raw materials (aluminum, steel, titanium, plastics) into the machines using overhead cranes or manual lifting.
- Select and install proper cutting tools, attachments, and accessories; perform tool offsets and touch-offs.
- Monitor machine performance during the production run to detect issues such as tool wear, vibrations, or chip buildup.
- Interpret blueprints and technical sketches to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpieces.
- Translate instructions into a sequence of operations; this often involves reading or editing G-code and M-code.
- Utilize CAD/CAM software (like Mastercam or Fusion 360) to create or modify toolpaths for complex geometries.
- Calculate speeds and feeds to optimize the cutting process and ensure the longevity of expensive carbide or high-speed steel tooling.
