responsibilities:
Currently, our client's tax functions are outsourced. As the first internal Tax professional, you will take the reins of the tax landscape. While no prior supervisory experience is required, you will be groomed to architect and oversee an internal tax department as the company continues its aggressive expansion.
- You will serve as the primary liaison with the external CPA firm, leading the strategic and methodical transition of the tax function in-house to create a self-sustaining internal department.
- Income Tax Oversight: Manage federal and multi-state corporate returns, extensions, and estimated payments. Support quarterly/annual income tax provisions (ASC 740) and general ledger reconciliations.
- Sales & Use Tax: File monthly and quarterly returns across various jurisdictions, ensuring proper tax treatment.
- Property Tax Management: Prepare renditions for company-owned and leased sites, manage valuation records, and coordinate with local assessors for appeals.
- Specialized Excise & Fuel Tax: Prepare federal and state tax returns (including IRS Form 720) and reconcile fuel movements across terminals and stores.
- Audit & Strategy: Serve as the primary point of contact for federal, state, and local tax audits. Monitor nexus and legislative changes as the retail footprint grows.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Accounting, Operations, and Supply Chain teams to ensure tax accuracy across all business units.
qualifications:
- Experience: 3+ years of corporate or public accounting tax experience.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required. Master's in Taxation is a plus.
- Certification: CPA license or CPA eligibility is strongly preferred.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with tax software (Avalara, ONESOURCE, Vertex, etc.). Advanced Excel skills and Strong knowledge of ASC 740 and multi-jurisdictional filings.
- Leadership Mindset: A desire to move into a management role and eventually build/lead a team.
