Breaking this cycle is amazingly simple if you make one or more small changes. Here are three quick and easy hacks that will help increase your productivity.
Stick to a routine
Experts say that by limiting the number of decisions you need to make, you free yourself up to have more energy and creativity for the ones that really matter. Routine removes “decision fatigue
.” For instance:
- If you wake up at the same time each day, you won’t be late.
- If your work clothes are always in the same spot, you won’t have to think about where to find them and if they’re clean.
- If you prepare your lunch the night before, you won’t have to worry about what you’ll make and if you have all the ingredients in the morning.
Ever wonder why you have great ideas when you’re in the shower, taking a run or doing the dishes? Your body and brain have done this so many times before — you’re on autopilot and free to focus on bigger and better things.
Put your phone away
This doesn’t just apply to the ride to and from work. Studies show that just hearing the notification beep or ring
has the power to distract you from what you’re doing.
If you know your phone breaks your concentration and makes your mind wander (and let’s face it, it does), put it away where you can’t see or hear it. Tell yourself you’ll check at dedicated times during the day (i.e., morning break, lunch hour and before you head home), then stick to it.
You can even tell your friends and family so they don’t expect to reach you immediately. If it’s an emergency, they know where to find you.
Leave yourself a list
Get ready for Monday, on Friday. Next week’s training schedule, tomorrow afternoon’s meeting and the piece of equipment that needs attention are all fresh on your mind, so make a list now.
When you come in on Monday, you can hit the ground running, attacking what’s most important without wracking your brain to remember.
