Working in factories, production plants, and machine shops, machine operators operate and monitor machinery to ensure products are manufactured with precision, efficiency, and consistent quality. This role combines technical knowledge with hands-on work, requiring attention to detail and a strong commitment to safety and productivity standards.

Becoming a machine operator does not require a college degree, making it an excellent entry-level position for individuals looking to start a career in manufacturing. On-the-job training is commonly provided, equipping workers with valuable skills while gaining real-world experience. With an average starting wage of $26.10 per hour, this role offers strong earning potential and clear opportunities for advancement. 

2. production supervisor

As the name implies, this role supervises the production process and workers to ensure everything proceeds smoothly. Maintaining operational efficiency is crucial to managing the production process, requiring strong organizational and decision-making skills. Soft skills are also a plus, as you’ll be managing other workers by giving detailed instructions and guiding them through the production process. The average hourly wage is around $38.30, though it varies depending on the industry.

3. assembler

Assemblers are fundamental to the manufacturing process, responsible for putting together components and parts to create the finished product. Assemblers may work in factories, production plants, and workshops, handling a variety of tasks from using hand tools and power tools to reading blueprints.

With no formal education requirements, this role represents a strong entry-level position, offering valuable skills and experience. Averaging $26.70 per hour, talent will have a clear and direct path for career advancement, where assemblers can quickly progress to more skilled roles.

4. production worker

Using specialized equipment, technicians test and verify products meet the required specifications – maintaining product consistency, safety, and customer satisfaction.

Talent in this role earns an average hourly wage of $38.80, with plenty of opportunities for growth. Gaining experience, staying up to date on quality control methods, and earning certifications can help workers advance their career to higher-level roles, such as quality control supervisor, quality assurance manager, and other specialized quality roles.

9. machinist

Machinists are skilled tradespeople who work with precision tools and machines to create complex parts and components, as well as fabricate, assemble, and repair equipment. Machinists measure, cut, and shape metal parts using a variety of tools, including lathes, milling machines, grinders, and saws.

As the need for precision parts and components grows, so does the need for qualified machinists. To be hired as a machinist, it’s necessary to complete educational programs, which may include a diploma, certificate program, or apprenticeship. However, some employers require a two-year associate degree in machine tool technology. The average hourly wage for this role is $30.40.

1. warehouse associate

Warehouse associates organize and prepare items, merchandise, or company supplies for shipping. The role entails some physically demanding tasks, such as lifting supplies and goods to and from delivery trucks. Typically, the minimum requirement for this position is a high school diploma. Beyond the skills necessary for the physically demanding tasks, interpersonal, organizational, time management, and basic mechanical skills can help talent to remain competitive. This role can earn around $25.20 per hour and gain relevant skills like logistics, performance best practices, and productivity.

2. forklift operator

As a forklift operator, talent will do just that – transfer objects within a site. To operate these vehicles, individuals must have a keen sense of attentiveness and accuracy to prevent mistakes or injuries.

With the growth of logistics, the demand for skilled forklift operators continues to rise, and there aren’t any formal education requirements. However, some employers prefer candidates who have completed a forklift operator training program or have previous experience. Average pay stands at $23 per hour; however, having a forklift license can allow negotiation for a higher wage.
