We are seeking an Interim Assistant Controller / Accounting Consultant REMOTE to step into a highly hands-on role to tackle an upcoming Retirement Plan Audit while supporting broader general accounting and payroll functions. This position acts as a critical technical anchor during a permanent search, requiring an operationally strong professional who can self-sufficiently triage audit requests, clean up complex accounts, and ensure compliance with minimal oversight.

responsibilities:
1. Retirement Plan Audit Support (Urgent Priority)
- Act as the lead technical resource for employee benefit plan audits starting immediately in June.
- Manage, review, and reconcile retirement plan transactions across two distinct plans.
- Build and validate detailed contribution schedules mapped out by individual pay periods.
- Prepare and organize comprehensive audit workpapers, backup schedules, and Form 5500 preparation assistance.
- Serve as the main point of contact to triage, coordinate, and respond to auditor requests between payroll, accounts payable, and general accounting.
- Validate and approve payroll journal entries using existing built-in templates.
- Support a multi-state payroll environment using ADP for approximately 300 employees across five separate corporate entities.
- Handle complex payroll-related tracking, matching data across multiple timekeeping platforms including Kronos and E-Time.
- Maintain absolute comfort with running or deeply backing up the payroll cycle in the event of team vacancies.
- Independently navigate general ledger activity to execute heavy account reconciliation and cleanup work with little to no training.
- Guide the internal accounting team to keep month-end close timelines and reconciliation schedules on track.
- Coordinate with the Controller on compliance, tax filings (Forms 990 and 990-T), and Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT) calculations.
qualifications:
- Audit Expertise: Strong, demonstrable background supporting complex financial and employee benefit plan audits. Prior exposure to retirement plan audit workflows is required.
- Experience: 5-8 years of progressive accounting and leadership experience with a deep understanding of GAAP. Candidate tenure is critical; a track record of 3+ years at previous career stops is the target.
- The "Hands-On" Factor: A career trajectory that shows a willingness to step in for direct reports, respect manual accounting tasks, and handle general ledger details alongside high-level strategy.
- The "Excel" Bar: Must possess advanced spreadsheet manipulation skills and pass an Excel assessment prior to client presentation. Fluency is required in:
- SUMIFs
- VLOOKUP / XLOOKUP
- MATCH
- IF statements
- ADP: Hard requirement.
- Oracle Fusion ERP / PBCS: Highly preferred ("Big Box" ERP experience required).
- Timekeeping Systems: Kronos and E-Time (Experience is a plus).
- Excel: Critical/Mandatory.
