An Optical Design Engineer is needed for an international biosciences company which supplies products for the life sciences industry in the San Jose, CA area. This role will design and optimize Polarization Volume Hologram (PVH) waveguides for next-generation SmartGlasses/AR devices, using advanced optical modeling and data analysis, while balancing performance, materials, and user experience.

responsibilities:
- Design and develop Polarization Volume Hologram (PVH) waveguides, leveraging your in-depth knowledge of waveguide key performance indicators (KPIs) to maximize performance while navigating relevant trade-offs.
- Create optical designs that effectively balance device performance with user experience, ensuring optimal functionality in AR applications.
- Analyze the impact of material changes, processes, and architectural modifications on the overall performance of waveguides.
- Drive a closed-loop optical data analysis process to iteratively align our optical models with experimental outcomes, enhancing design accuracy and reliability.
- Work with the computational team to update and optimize design capabilities and workflows.
- Work directly with metrology and integration to understand the fundamental of device performance.
- Experience modeling the optical response of augmented reality devices by using RCWA, FDTD, ray-tracing, and related formalisms.
- Experience with some of the commercial packages (VirtualLab, Zemax, LightTools, Code V, Lumerical, etc.) and self-written code in relevant languages (Python, Matlab, etc.).
- A clear understanding of AR technology and how materials and architectures influence KPIs and user experience.
- A clear understanding of the optical characterization methods used in AR/VR components metrology.
- A clear understanding of color & perceptual science as related to luminance, uniformity, and artifacts.
- Willingness to push the boundaries of current approaches and to innovate in the field of AR device modeling.
- Experience working with liquid crystal-based optics.
- Fundamental understanding of AR display system architectures.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Bs. in Physics, Optics, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
- Extensive industry experience working on the design of AR technology-related products (4 or more years).
- Fundamental understanding of diffractive waveguide technology.
