Great client is seeking their first dedicated Controls Engineer to act as the site's technical authority for advanced industrial control systems and multi-axis CNC machinery.
This is a true hybrid engineering role: you will own site-level controls architecture, direct external automation integrators during capital machine purchases, and get hands-on in the plant troubleshooting production lines under active rate and downtime pressure. Seeking candidates with direct technical depth in CNC machine tool programming, interpolated motion trajectory, and the internal handshakes between PLCs and CNC kernels (specifically Siemens Sinumerik and/or FANUC).
APPLY TODAY!
location: Middle River, Maryland
job type: Permanent
salary: $115,000 - 140,000 per year
work hours: 8am to 5pm
education: Bachelors
responsibilities:
- Write and optimize PLC state logic that handshakes directly with CNC controllers-managing Mode Groups (AUTO, MDI, JOG), M/S/T code decoding, feed hold interlocks, channel overrides, and axis enable/inhibit logic.
- Develop, debug, and support control code natively in Siemens TIA Portal / Sinumerik (840D sl / ONE) or FANUC PMC Ladder III (G&F interface signals).
- Establish plant-wide standards for controls architecture, machine safety philosophies (ISO 13849 / IEC 62061), platform priorities, tagging/naming conventions, and version control.
- Act as the technical lead for machine acquisitions. Author controls Statements of Work (SOWs) and User Requirements Specifications (URS), review vendor schematics/logic, and run Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).
- Act as the final technical escalation point when critical machinery goes down, rapidly isolating root causes across PLC logic, NC parameters, electrical prints, sensors, and mechanical hardware simultaneously.
- Integrate multi-axis robotic cells (FANUC, ABB, KUKA), coordinated robot-to-CNC handshakes, vision guidance, and industrial OT networks (Profinet, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, OPC-UA).
qualifications:
-Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Controls Engineering, or related technical field, plus a minimum of 5 years of hands-on industrial controls experience (or an equivalent combination of education and direct shop-floor controls experience).
-Demonstrated experience with multi-axis interpolated trajectory motion (5-axis CNCs, large overhead gantries, or contouring machinery), not just point-to-point positioning.
-Hands-on experience developing or modifying the PLC logic that directly communicates with a CNC controller's internal states on at least one of their primary platforms
-Direct involvement in defining acceptance criteria, conducting FAT/SAT sign-offs, and managing vendor punch lists for automated equipment.
-Demonstrated track record supporting active production machinery under downtime pressure-tracing faults across electrical, controls, and mechanical hardware simultaneously
