job summary: The Specimen Processing Technician (SPT I) provides essential general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. This role requires a background in data entry and involves a variety of tasks including A-station operations, presorting, pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting. The SPT I must perform all functions with confidence, accuracy, and in a timely manner, demonstrating strong organizational skills and a thorough understanding of specimen types related to client test orders. location: Halethorpe, Maryland job type: Contract salary: $18 - 22 per hour work hours: 11 to 7 education: High School responsibilities: Perform general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department, including A-station operations, presorting, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting. Execute pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory. Identify and resolve problems related to specimen types, missing information, and issues with sorting, racking, centrifuging, delivery, and storage of specimens, or forward information for timely resolution. Demonstrate an understanding of compliance policies related to test ordering by researching test order information on translation tables, computer systems, and the directory of services. Meet quality and production standards within six months of completing training. Complete all required written documentation legibly, understandably, and within assigned timeframes. Adhere to attendance guidelines, reporting to work on time and supporting departmental performance during coworker absences. Learn additional functions within Tech Operations and Specimen Processing to facilitate progression to the next level. Handle multiple tasks simultaneously and thrive in a fast-paced production environment. Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with all levels of staff. Maintain composure while working under pressure and exercise good judgment in problem-solving. Adhere to Core Values, safety, compliance, and work process policies and procedures. Maintain a neat and clean work area, complying with 5S workplace standards. Perform manual functions including sorting, racking, pickup and delivery of specimens, specimen storage (potentially running sorters in archive mode), centrifugation, and aliquoting. qualifications: Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Knowledge: Basic understanding of computers is required. Preferred knowledge includes laboratory testing and/or laboratory specimen processing. Experience: No experience is required, but previous laboratory experience is preferred. Previous experience in a production environment (e.g., Amazon, UPS, FedEx, Tesla) is strongly preferred. Medical Background: A medical background, including medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory, is preferred.
