Randstad has a longstanding history of bike riding: founder Frits Goldschmeding famously biked talent to their first jobs in Holland, the home of Randstad. In 2014, employees combined this legacy with their commitment to charity by creating the blueprint for “Ride for Myriam,” an annual cycling tour honoring Randstad Canada’s Myriam Laaouan, who passed away after a brave fight with Leukemia.

Since then, Randstad has witnessed the initiative double in size each year with greater employee participation from all levels of the company. It has been etched into employees’ lives as a cause that is near and dear to their hearts and is undoubtedly a pillar in Randstad’s ongoing corporate social responsibility.

What originated as five executives riding from Montreal to Toronto, just weeks after Myriam’s passing, has expanded into a greater force that unites employees from Randstad Canada and Randstad US as they embark on a four-day, 600 km cross-country cycling journey, to acknowledge Myriam’s fight and support those still fighting cancer.

This year, 61 employees from Randstad North America (including many returning faces) came together for the fourth annual Ride for Myriam. The four-day venture kicked off in Montreal with executives, recruiters and office staff riding alongside each other toward the final destination of Salem. Riders were pushed from relatively flat, scenic Canadian countrysides to the challenging steepness of Cannon Mountain, but continued with unwavering group support and the fueling sensation of an overarching mission.

The experience and emotions cannot fairly be described without being there, but written testimonies give us a good picture:

“This year as we finished, Myriam's husband, who rode with us, finished with a heartfelt thank you. It was by far the most I ever felt connected to the spirit of Myriam and the spirit of the ride. Randstad, the participants and the support crew make it possible, and feeling Stefan's raw emotion was something I'll never forget as long as I live. ” Chris Martin, Senior Vice President of Sales Design and Strategy, Randstad Technologies

“Not only was I able to give back and be part of such a great cause, but I also was able to forge new friendships, see some breathtaking views, learn the true meaning of strength and walk away with a renewed appreciation of how precious life truly is.” Lorin Willen, Brand Marketing Manager, Randstad Life Sciences

This year, Randstad raised $145,000 that will be donated for cancer research to the American Cancer Society and the Princess Margaret Foundation. Without the support of our internal employees, their friends and family and the community, we would not have been able to attain such a profound goal for Myriam.

New relationships have been formed among Randstad lines of businesses due to a worthwhile cause and we find employees transferring the tone of this initiative to an even more meaningful day at work. Our efforts have surpassed what is shown in numbers to a notably invested and passionate Randstad family.
