Randstad is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to architect, develop, and scale mission-critical, cloud-native enterprise services for a premier passenger transportation and rail logistics client based in Washington, DC. Operating in a high-throughput, event-driven ecosystem, you will design robust backend systems using Java 17 and Spring Boot while leveraging an extensive AWS serverless and containerized architecture. This role requires a strong blend of hands-on development, Twelve-Factor methodology execution, and system observability to ensure the absolute reliability, scale, and performance of national transit data and transaction systems.

responsibilities:
Architecture & Design: Partner with clients and business stakeholders to translate complex transport and logistics requirements into highly scalable, available, and performant cloud-native IT solutions.
Backend Development: Design and implement low-latency, event-driven backend microservices using Java 17, Spring Boot, and Maven, with a focus on core transaction workflows.
Data Integration: Build and maintain high-volume data streams and pipelines optimized for transactional message processing and cross-system integration.
Cloud Infrastructure: Deploy and manage containerized and serverless workloads across AWS architectures, including ECS, Lambda, EventBridge, and API Gateway.
DevOps & Automation: Collaborate on the continuous improvement of infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD pipelines utilizing Jenkins, AWS CodePipeline, and CloudFormation.
Testing & Quality Assurance: Ensure absolute code integrity by executing strict automated testing strategies using JUnit, Mockito, and Behavior-Driven Development (BDD) testing frameworks.
Production Support & Observability: Monitor application health, troubleshoot complex runtime anomalies, and build dashboards utilizing AWS CloudWatch to enforce performance benchmarks.
qualifications:
Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and 7+ years of progressive enterprise backend software engineering experience.
Java Expertise: Advanced proficiency in Java 17 (or higher), Spring Boot frameworks, and Maven build automation.
AWS Integration: Extensive, hands-on experience developing within the AWS cloud-native ecosystem, specifically naming ECS, EventBridge, S3, Lambda, SQS, SNS, API Gateway, and RDS/Aurora.
Automated Testing Suite: Solid experience writing robust test suites using JUnit and Mockito, along with automated integration testing frameworks like Cucumber, Playwright, or Cypress.
Methodology & Security: Deep understanding of the Twelve-Factor Application Methodology and practical knowledge of application security vulnerabilities (OWASP top 10) and mitigation techniques.
Soft Skills: Strong analytical and troubleshooting mindset with exceptional oral and written communication skills to articulate technical solutions to cross-functional teams.
